Time Out of the Office

A few weeks ago Rob planned an end-of-summer rafting trip with his family.  It's important for anyone to leave their daily work tasks, and spend time bonding with their family and friends.  This allows for a healthy balance between work and play.  Here in Oregon, we are really lucky to have multiple outdoor activities to pick from.  One of those places is the Deschutes River in Central Oregon.  Rob has been floating this river for many many years, and loves to take a yearly trip with family and friends to experience the rapids.  Rob is so familiar with the river, that he has been guiding groups down for about 10 years.  This year he recruited his brother Rick, who lives in Bend, to guide a boat along side him.  Together there was a lot of fun, intense moments, and wet passengers.  Here are a few pictures showing how much fun they had:

This year the Chem-Dry convention was held in Miami, Florida.  Rob took his oldest son Quentin along for training on owning and operating a business.  Together they attended sessions on marketing, equipment and product improvements, and went on the presidents club cruise together.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Recently we found a very honest review on Yelp.  It caught a few of us off guard but the more we shared it with customers the more positive feedback we received.  This customer was very pleasant to work with and we were happy with the results.  Take a peek and let us know what you think!

Sweets was my second attempt at upholstery cleaning in the Sherwood area.  They would have earned 5 stars from me had it not been for the pricing, which I find to be a bit much...more on that at the end.  

I have a dog and a cat and get my carpets  cleaned twice a year and my furniture once.  About a month ago, my cat was sick and she urinated on my couch.  I had a different company out and they totally botched the job, but still charged full price.  Once I had the money back in my budget, I started calling around to have the couch done again.  

After calls to 5 different places I chose Sweets, and I am perfectly satisfied that I did.  

The girl who took my original call was friendly and completely professional.  I outlined what I needed done: a thorough deep clean of my couch cushions including a pet urine treatment, the goal being no smell left at all without having to replace my couch.  She answered all my questions and gave me every option available to me.  I made an appointment to have them come out to clean, sanitize, deodorize and do the PURT treatment.  She let me know that it sounded like what I needed would be a little more difficult than usual, and that it might require a little more dry time.  I never mind a little extra inconvenience as long as I am warned about it in advance, so the extra step she took in telling me this impressed me.  

On my scheduled day, a young man showed up at the beginning of the 2 hour window they'd given me and listened completely as I told him what I needed.  He'd already been told, but he was polite and let me speak my peace without cutting me off.  He looked at the cushions and did an appraisal and gave me the same warnings as the scheduler, that he would need to soak my cushions and that they'd take a long time to dry.  

He took my cushions out to the truck and an hour later, returned them to my apartment giving me instructions to leave them wet for a day and a half to allow for the treatment to soak in and break up the urine smell and then to start the business of aggressively drying them out.  

I anticipated about 4 days of not being able to sit on my cushions.  As it turns out, they began drying on their own faster than we'd discussed and they were completely dry by yesterday afternoon, having been cleaned on Thursday afternoon.  

I am happy to report that there is NO smell left, and I've pressed my face right into them.  I'd honestly been worried that I'd have to replace the entire couch and chair.  Not necessary now.  

The young man who came was extremely friendly and professional and even handed me a Dove Bar along with his business card.  Chocolate never hurts.  ;)

As for the pricing, it was $150 to get my couch and chair cushions done.  To me, this is pretty damn expensive.  I'm new to the area, and I'd had another company before I moved that did all my carpets and upholstery and it would usually be $120 for 800 square feet of carpet and my couch, stain and pet treatments included.  To be fair, this time the cushions were in rough shape (that smell!) and required a bit of TLC.  But the cheapskate side of me still thinks that $150 for 3 ass cushions, 2 pillow-size back cushions and 2 throw pillows is a little bit much.  That's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars, and I will for sure use these guys again for the job they did and their courtesy and professionalism....next time I'll just ask for coupons or package deals.

Keep A Lid On It

Yesterday, a loyal customer of our dropped off her brand new Suburban with a large amount of laundry detergent spilled in the back.  Seeing it for the first time was shocking.  The detergent was a bright purple color and there was A LOT of it.  The first step was to extract as much as possible off the carpet.  This picture was taken after the first step:

 The second step was to start cleaning. Not knowing if the purple would stain the carpets, we did as usual and added the Chem-Dry magic-The Natural, and started cleaning.  Here is our first few passes:

The detergent cleaned up great! It took quite a few passes but cleaning a cleaning solution was pretty successful. 

Upon finishing the carpets, we discovered that the trunk latch had a large amount of detergent built up in it.:

As we started suctioning out the detergent, we discovered that the whole cavity was full of detergent.  We removed the cover and started to suction, again....

Finally, the spill was all cleaned up.  In fact it smelled really good.  Here is the final product:

Last night was our annual Sweet's Chem-Dry Christmas Party.  We held it at The Trees Restaurant here in Sherwood.  The Trees is one of our valued customers and we were pleasantly surprised by the wonderfully delicious food.  The staff was warm and friendly and offered great service.  The atmosphere was cheerful and the holiday decorations were festive.
All but 2 members of the staff were able to attend, along with the owner's wife Jenni.  We had a relaxing evening enjoying each others company outside the office.  The white elephant exchange offered many laughs and tricks to get the best gift of all.  The evening ended with dessert and a kind and generous gift from the owner Rob.

Happy Holidays to All!!
It's only the 5th of December and it already feels as if it has been a busy month! Thanksgiving week was wonderful.  We did have a few customers call for a quick cleaning before the big turkey feast.  We are happy to report that we were able to squeeze them in with the help of our awesome technicians.  The office was closed Thanksgiving Day and the day after.  It's fair to say that a few of us took advantage of that and hit some Black Friday shopping.  The staff enjoyed the time off and came back well rested and ready to start the Christmas Season.  A few of our different holiday coupons and specials were mailed out which will be a great addition to the other deals in the shopping world.  We also planned our Sweet's Christmas Party.  This annual event is highly anticipated by the staff and is always full of fun memories.  This year we are proud to be having the party at a local restaurant called The Trees, here in Sherwood.  We have built a strong business relationship with them and have cleaned their carpets a few times now.  They have outstanding food which will be greatly enjoyed by everyone that attends the party.  
The weather has been very cold which means more work for us.  To avoid frozen liquid in the vans, we have had to place heating lamps inside them and hope it's enough heat to keep the product from freezing.  Our techs stay bundled up as they drive around the Portland Metro area and clean for our loyal customers.  We have had quite a few customers call requesting a cleaning before their holiday parties.  This will continue to happen the closer we get to Christmas Day and we are always happy to prepare the home for a gathering.  We also clean office spaces and had a business call us the other day to clean for them before they hold their Christmas party in the office.  We are always happy to help.

Busy Season

Often times in a business like this there is a busy season and a slow season.  Seasonal work can be affected by weather, promotions, events, holidays, or just the spending trends of customers.  We have noticed that one of our busy seasons happens to be during the holidays.  Although the weather is not ideal for cleaning carpets, the timing is perfect!!  Many of us host Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas parties, or even Christmas eve or Christmas day festivities.  Our customers take pride in their homes and desire their carpets to be in tip-top shape for their holiday guests.  Every year, despite the early reminders to have your carpets cleaned, we have customers that call two days before Thanksgiving or even the day before, in a panic, needing their carpets cleaned as soon as possible.  As difficult as it may be, we manage to find time in our schedule to accommodate that last minute cleaning.  Thanks to our outstanding technicians who work till the last minute possible to make our customers happy, preparing their homes for guests.  In fact not only do we prepare for guests, but we also clean up after them.  Many of our customers find that after having multiple parties-food stains, wine stains, and muddy footprints need to be tended to.  Calling us post-holidays is an equally important time to book a cleaning for those carpets.  Be on the look out for great specials during this time to help work with your budget.
